Robert R. "Bob" Girk
Robert R. Girk, age 99, a retired attorney and certified public accountant, came peacefully to the end of a long and wonderful life in Indianapolis, Indiana, on March 6, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia L. Girk, and a daughter, Barbara Lee Girk. He is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Winkler (Gary), Nan Girk (Gregg Streitmatter) and Kristin Girk-Robinson (Steve Robinson). He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Bob and Pat were married in St. Paul, Minnesota and moved to Indianapolis shortly thereafter. When World War II broke out, Bob enlisted and enrolled in officer training school. He served in Army Intelligence, Finance and the Air Force during the war.
Bob was an attorney, CPA and instructor during his extensive career. Bob primarily practiced law in the areas of estate planning, probate and corporate law. He enjoyed the practice of law, working until he was 87. Early in his career, he lectured at Purdue University Life Insurance Marketing Institute and also taught Chartered Life Underwriter study courses. Bob spoke to life insurance groups across the country on estate planning. Bob was a true gentleman and an honest and outstanding lawyer. He was well-respected in the community. To many he was Mr. Girk.
A graduate of Indiana University School of Law, Bob was a member of the American, Indiana and Indianapolis Bar Associations, and also the Indiana Society of CPAs and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
He was a member, president and district governor of the Indianapolis Gyro Club for a combined 64 years, and a member of the Lawyers Club of Indianapolis, American Business Club, the Service Club of Indianapolis, Knights of Columbus, and Meridian Hills Country Club.
Bob was formerly a Director of Peoples Bank & Trust Company for 25 years, Indiana Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company, St. Vincent Hospital Foundation, Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana Foundation and a number of other companies and non-profits.
Bob was a loyal husband, loving father and friend and mentor to many. He will be missed. He played golf most of his adult life and took up tennis at age 60, playing well into his 80s. Bob loved to travel, going to many places in the world. He even ventured to Australia and New Zealand at the age of 90 as a birthday present to himself! Bob enjoyed Florida, staying many winters with Pat in Boca Raton. He spent several winters staying in Sanibel with visits from his daughters and their spouses.
The family wishes to thank the warm and thoughtful staff at the Forum at the Crossing Memory Care for the wonderful care, patience and understanding they gave Bob during his last years.
