Russell F. Desch
Passed away unexpectedly at his home July 13, 2013 at the age of 92. He was born July 11, 1921 in Indianapolis to William and Mary Desch. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1939, and was awarded a scholarship to the GM Institute to study engineering. Life's circumstances prevented him from accepting the scholarship and instead, he began a 47-year career in sales at L.S. Ayers & Company. It was at Ayres that he met his wife Zelma, whom he married in 1948, and who preceded him in death in 2011. Russ served his county as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he returned to work at Ayres, retiring in 1986. Russ has two sisters, Amelia Gumbel and Elsie Allison, who preceded him in death, as well as a brother Harold, who died in childhood. Russ was an accomplished musician and photographer. He loved working outdoors in his yard and was a keen gardener. He was an avid history buff and a voracious reader of books. Russ and Zelma were longtime member of Little Flower Catholic Church. He is survived by his two devoted daughters, Nancy Desch and Julie Desch, as well as a nephew, Jerry Allison, and a niece, Karen Irvin. Visitation will be Thursday July 18 at Feeney-Hornak Shadeland Mortuary , at 1307 N. Shadeland Avenue from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a memorial service to be held immediately following at 2:30 p.m. He will be interred at St. Joseph Cemetery alongside his beloved wife Zelma.
