Sally Bowers Harrell
78, passed away peacefully at her home on May 1st.
Born in Huntington, Indiana in 1934, Sally moved to Indianapolis where she attended Shortridge High School. Sally went on to attend Purdue University, the University of Lausanne, Switzerland and ultimately earned a BA in French from Middlebury College, Vermont. At the age of 10 Sally joined the Rivera Club swim team which began her lifelong swimming career. Sally competed in 13 national swimming meets, and was an alternate in butterfly for the 1952 Olympics held in Helsinki, Finland. Sally could be found swimming laps at the Rivera Club the day before her death.
Sally was a committed philanthropist who lent her considerable skill to the Children's Bureau, one of the oldest privately funded child welfare agencies in the Midwest, and Orchard Country Day School. Sally was a member of the Children's Bureau Board of Directors from 1971 to present and Chairman of the Board in 1983. In 1980, Sally became only the fourth person in the Children's Bureau history to be elected a life member of the board. At Orchard, Sally served as President of the Orchard Parents Association 1973-1974 and in 1976 she became one of the first women presidents on the Board of Trustees where she served from many years. More recently, Sally was an active member of the Orchard Board of Governors. All six of Sally's children and one of her grandchildren attended Orchard Country Day.
Sally's passions were long and varied. She served as a rock and champion for her six children as well as the innumerable friends and family she welcomed into her home. Sally was a wonderful entertainer who embraced opportunities to bring everyone together to enjoy the festivities of the Memorial Day Weekend or elate in one of her many cherished holiday traditions. She was an active member of the Players, Dramatic and Indianapolis Athletic Clubs. Sally was always a proud mother of her two bright and beautiful daughters and her four boys who earned their Eagle Scout Award from Troop 174 in Indianapolis. Sally will be sadly missed by all who loved her.
Sally is survived by her sister Susan Young Schwartz, daughters Holly Cole (Jim), Karen Harrell, sons Samuel (Lisa), Kevin (Carol), Donald (Jennifer), Kenneth (Ann) and grandchildren Eddie Peterson, Samantha and Anne Harrell, Tommy and Kathy Johnston, Kevin and John Harrell, Max and Macy Harrell and Eli and Harper Harrell.
