Rev. Walter J. Dixon

86, Indianapolis, went to be with the Lord on January 26, 2013.

Ordained as a minister at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, he was associate pastor there until he was called to pastor Pioneer Baptist Church for 34 years. In retirement, having been an active member of Witherspoon Presbyterian Church. Later he joined Ambassador Baptist Church.

A graduate of Crispus Attucks High School, he matriculated at Lincoln University, Chester, Pennsylvania and Indiana University, Bloomington. As an honorably discharged U. S. Army veteran of World War II, he worked at The U. S. Postal Service in Waukegan, IL and returned to Indianapolis to work at National Starch & Chemical. He worked in auto parts for many years and was a coach operator for Indianapolis Transit Company, having won the Indianapolis Bus Rodeo in 1982, 1986 and 1988.He was a Training Instructor at Metro Coach (IndyGo) and operator for 10 years.

He was a member of Indiana Historical Society, Fine Arts Society, L. E. Newsome String Ensemble, Witherspoon String Ensemble, Sages, Men's Chorus and Chancel Choir.

On Saturday, February 2, there will be visitation from 9 a.m. to Noon, with The Celebration of Life Services at Noon at Witherspoon Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at Crown Hill.

He was the widower of Velma Dixon. He was also antedated in death by his first wife, Linnie Cosby. Those left to cherish his memory include his sons, Rev. Dwayne (Nita), Darnell (Ruth) and Bruce Dixon; daughters, Stephanie Hordge, Jennifer Knapp (Kevin) and Arlana Hester; 9 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; cousin, Maryann Adams and dear special friend, Furniss Holloway.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be directed to Pioneer Missionary Baptist Church, 2001 Yandes St., Indpls., IN 46202
