William Bruce "Bill" Wylam

Of Indianapolis, Indiana died March 08, 2014. He was born in Youngstown, OH on December 21, 1935 to William and Ruth Wylam. Bill graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1953 and received a BS in Materials Engineering from Purdue University in 1957. He married Barbara Ann Rawlings June 8, 1957.

He joined the Delco Remy Division of General Motors Corporation in 1957 and served as Chief Engineer-Batteries, Director of International Manufacturing, and Director of Technology Development. Early on, he led the development of the maintenance free battery and later many electric and hybrid-electric power train systems including the motor and battery system for the GM EV1 electric vehicle the 1997 forerunner of the Chevy Volt. Leaving GM in 1997, he became a technology executive with Remy International, supplier of high power components for North American and European hybrid systems, until his retirement in 2005.

In his retirement he was CEO and founder of International Energy, LLC, an energy consulting company based in Indianapolis. He remained Chairman of the Board of Directors of Electricore, Inc., a technology development consortium he founded. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Flagship Enterprise Center since its creation in 2002, and the Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy since its formation.

In recognition of his role in advancing new technologies, the William B. Wylam Energy Storage and Conversion Laboratory on the IUPUI campus of the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology was named in his honor in 1997. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from Purdue University in May, 2006. He and Barbara were founding members of Holy Spirit at Geist Catholic Church in Fishers, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his sister Carol Dunning and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons Dr. Mark (Jill), Rochester, Minnesota; Bruce (Kathy), Carmel, Indiana; David (Dee Ann), Ferdinand, Indiana; and Steven (Jacqui), Fishers, Indiana. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

Visitation will be on Thursday, March 13 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit of Geist Catholic Church, Fishers, Indiana and on Friday, March 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The funeral mass will be on Friday, March 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit of Geist Catholic Church, Fishers, Indiana. A private burial will follow.
