Willliam Frederick "Bill" Laird
77, of Waldron , IN passed away on Tuesday, October 29th, 2013 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born in Shelby County on May 23, 1936, he was the son of Harold and Mary (Long) Laird.
He married Faith Meal on September 8, 1957 at the Waldron United Methodist Church.
He was a 1954 graduate of Waldron High School and a 1958 graduate of Purdue University where he earned a bachelor degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
He began his engineering career at Boeing in Seattle, Washington in 1958, later moving to Nashville, Tennessee where he worked for Avco Corporation. He returned to Indiana in 1964 to work for Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors and retired from Rolls Royce.
Bill was a long time farmer and a prominent breeder and exhibitor of purebred swine. An avid sports enthusiast, he spent many years officiating high school and college basketball and football.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Mary Frances (Laird) Bush and a brother, Dwight Norman Laird who died in infancy.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Kevin (Valynda) of Bloomington, Eric (Mary Ann) of Mooresville, Ted (Regina) of Arlington and a daughter, Beth Ann (Tony) Lennen of Shelbyville. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren: Dustin, Jennifer (Jordan) Black, Maggie (John) Absalom, Nicholas, Jacob, Benjamin (Val), Morgan, Andrew, Allison, Caitlin, Nolan, Anna Phares and Mitchell; three step -grandchildren: David Lennen, Nikki (Adam) Jones and Jessie Davis; one great grandson, Carson Laird and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brothers Dwain (Lossie) Laird of Shelbyville and Robert (Christine) Laird of Morristown.
He was a long time member of Waldron United Methodist Church where he served in many leadership positions. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Waldron United Methodist Church or the Shelbyville/Shelby County Animal Shelter.
Visitation will be held at the Waldron United Methodist Church on Friday, November 1st, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted by the Reverend Marcy Patrick at the Waldron United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 2nd at 10 a.m. followed by burial at the Moscow Cemetery.
