Cheri was born in Alameda, CA, swam on the Alameda Swim Team all through school, was valedictorian at Alameda High, earned her Bachelor of Science degree from U.C. Davis and proceeded directly to U.C. Davis School of Veterinarian Medicine. Cheri was working at an externship in Santa Cruz when she met her future husband Scott. They married in 1992 and soon moved to KS. She received a kidney pancreas transplant less than a year later and was always an advocate for organ transplantation. By the late 1990s, Cheri and Scott started their own family with the arrival of Jack and soon after Julia. Cheri practiced veterinary medicine for 20 years, and was a charter member of the Leawood, KS Rotary Club.
Cheri is survived by her devoted husband Scott, and children Jack and Julia, her mother Karen and father Robert (Buck) O'Brien, sisters Joyce (John) Craig and Kelly (Harry) Langdon, and nieces Mary Jane and Gina Mae Langdon, aunts and uncles, Paul (Mary) Kooyman, Ron (Elaine) Kooyman, Mary (Hugh) Tebault, Bill (Nancy) O'Brien, Earl Reid, in-laws Marge and Ed Jones, sister-in-law Debbie (Doug) Engelland, brothers-in-law Doug and Tyler Jones, numerous nieces and nephews as well as dear friends in KS, CA, and across the country. She was predeceased by her grandparents Eleanor and Casey Kooyman, Ivan and Mary O'Brien, and Uncle Neil and Aunt Leane Kooyman and Aunt Barbara Reid.
Cheri was buried in Sterling KS on July 3, 2013. A celebration of her life will be held on August 11, 2013 from 1-4 p.m. in the Trident Room at the Officers Club in Alameda, CA.
