Christine Smith Hill December 27, 1920 - April 22, 2013 Resident of San Leandro Mrs. Christine Smith Hill was a woman who dedicated her life to teaching and being a service to all mankind. She will forever be remembered in her community for her high fashion, spiked heels, and show stopping hats. She was a woman who epitomized grace and etiquette with her carriage and presence in all events. Christine Smith Hill was born in Austin, TX. She was the youngest of Webb Smith and Tommie Bedell's five children. Like per parents before she followed in their footsteps and became a teacher. Mrs. Hill was a retired English teacher and was employed by the Oakland Unified School District for twenty-two years. Mrs. Christine Smith Hill attended Samuel Huston College, the University of Texas, Dillard University, San Francisco State University, and the University of California. While an undergraduate at Samuel Huston College she was initiated into the Alpha Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated in 1938. Christine served a life time membership in AKA. Over her many years of membership she served as the president in both undergraduate and graduate chapters. Since 1957 she has maintained active membership in Alpha Nu Omega Chapter. In March 2013 she was recognized for her seventy-five years of membership. She was the far west region's only Diamond Soror. Mrs. Christine Smith Hill spent a life time of service to the community. She was a former president of the Ida L. Jackson Education and Housing Foundation, former board of directors of Volunteers of America, member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity wives, and member of the Taylor Memorial Circle of Methodist Women and the Methodist Church. One of her greatest accomplishments as President of the Ida L. Jackson Education Foundation was to give scholarships to students attending University of California. Mrs. Hill and her family moved to Oakland from New Orleans in 1957 when her husband became the minister at Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hill enjoyed an active membership with the Church for the past forty-nine years. After the death of her husband in 1997 she began the Robert D. Hill Memorial Scholarship Program which has given out over 25,000 dollars in scholarships to support students attending college. She was very proud of her ability to serve students of Taylor Memorial Church and students of McClymonds High School in Oakland, CA. Mrs. Christine Smith Hill was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mrs. Hill and her late husband were married for fifty-seve years. Four children were born in unikon: Wanda Marie, Rosemary (deceased), Stanley (deceased) and Janet. Four grandchildren, John Hargis, Jr., Chrstine Hargis, melody Smith, Ron Christopher Smith; and nine great grandchildren: John Hargis III, Joshua Hargis, Gwendolyn Hargis; Brian Victores; Jasmine Williams, Raven Williams; Atirol Smith, Ron Angelo Smith and Roman Smith.
