Donald Gerald Dresel|
Resident of Oakland
Born Napa, CA, died 4/26/13 at age 76 of COPD, when his body couldn't keep up with his tremendous spirit.
Predeceased by parents, Carl "Bunk" and Verona Dresel, and partner, Larry G. Larrabee.
Survived by brothers, Charles "Skip" Dresel (Mary) and Carl "Bud" Dresel (Alma); step-children Jon Larrabee, Clark Larrabee, and Jodi L. Brewer and their families; nephews and nieces Peter, Chuck, Libby, Karen, Anne, and Tricia; 5 grandnephews and grandnieces; and a host of dear friends, especially Ray, who was there for him to the very end, and his Most Holy Redeemer family.
Graduate of the University of San Francisco and Columbia University (MA, Hospital Administration), serving as an Army officer in between.
Lived many years in Sacramento, where he was the administrator of Mercy General Hospital and he and Larry ran a French restaurant in Old Town. Moved to the Bay Area, where they started a travel business, then returned to the health care industry.
Don could "cut a rug" with the best of them. He made holidays special, with inspired, over-the-top presents his specialty. He was justifiably proud of still fitting into his Lederhosen, decades later. He loved fine food and drink, family, travel, good friends, walking Lake Merritt, his old Napa crowd, classical music and opera, going to the gym, dominoes, and Larry, not in that order.
He, and the ever-present twinkle in his eye, will be dearly missed.
Funeral Mass with reception to follow, 1:00 PM Saturday, May 18, Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 18th & Diamond streets, San Francisco.
Memorial contributions in Don's honor may be made to the COPD Foundation (copdfoundation.org), the San Francisco Opera Association (sfopera.com), or the Lymphoma Research Foundation (lymphoma.org).
