Resident of Fremont
Edward Joseph "E.J." Gallagher, 78, resident of Fremont, passed away peacefully at his home on February 23 surrounded by his loving family.
E.J. was born March 7, 1934, in San Mateo, CA to Raymond and Laura Gallagher. He attended Serra High School and began his collegiate studies at SF State College before enlisting in the Army. He played football in high school and college and was part of the Army traveling team while stationed in Japan during the Korean War. When he returned from Japan, he attended USF and received a business degree in accounting. Edward married the love of his life, Bilma, on January 26, 1957 and together they raised 6 children.
E.J. spent the majority of his working career as a self-employed accountant working from his home office. Edward had a passion for his family and his church. He was gentle, sweet, fun loving and full of life. He had a twinkle in his eyes and an Irish sense of humor that was passed on to his children. He loved large family gatherings and barbeques. He loved playing with his children and coached their sports teams including little league and CYO basketball. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and an original member of St. Leonard's Parish when it opened in 1960 and remained an active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Over the years, Ed was a Lector, Eucharistic minister, CCD teacher, member of the finance committee, and he was always ready to lend a hand wherever he was needed.
E.J. is preceded in death by both parents, his eldest son Kevin and Kevin's wife Betsy. Also his brothers Robert, Richard, Neal, Father Thomas Gallagher, sisters Laura Flynn, and Sister Mary Margaret Gallagher.
He is survived by and will be dearly missed by Bilma, his wife of 56 years; his five children Laurene Brinlee (Phil), Sean Gallagher, Julie Bilotti (Dennis), Brian Gallagher (Tina), and Christopher Gallagher (Jennifer); fifteen grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; two brothers James Gallagher and Raymond Gallagher, one sister Gerry Curtis and many nieces and nephews
A memorial service will be held Saturday March 16, 2013 at 12 noon at Our Lady of Guadalupe.
