Dr. Edward J. Whalen

Dr. Edward J. Whalen died peacefully on July 19th at the age of 93. He was the loving father of four sons; Robert (Li), Peter (Ellen), Steven (Gloria), and Joseph (Therese); and was the proud grandfather of Nicole, Natalie, Irene, Jeffrey, Jessica, Christopher, and Kevin. He is survived by his brother Robert Whalen (Gayle) and his former wife Bea Whalen.
Edward was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Saugus, Massachusetts. He had a lifelong passion for learning which led him into medicine. Dr. Whalen received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Tufts University. He served in the army as a captain during the Korean War and rose to become Chief of Medicine at Fort Dix. In 1958, he moved to the West Coast and soon settled in Fremont where he began a long career in private practice and service to the community. Dr. Whalen was one of the original medical staff at Washington Hospital and maintained a practice in Fremont until he was 92. When not with family, his happiest moments were with his patients, for whom he cared deeply.
Edward's life reflected his integrity, work ethic and desire to heal others. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and colleagues. The Whalen family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all of the physicians and staff at Washington Hospital who cared for him during his illness.
Family and friends are invited to funeral services on Thursday, July 31st at Holy Spirit Church, 37588 Fremont Blvd., Fremont. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m.followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Washington Hospital Healthcare Foundation.
