Gabriel Castillo Jr. Obituary
Gabriel Castillo Jr.
May 24, 1912 - Nov. 17, 2013
Resident of San Lorenzo
Gabriel Castillo Jr. passed away early morning on Nov. 17, 2013. He was 101 years old. Gabe was born in Oahu, in the Hawaiian Islands, where his parents migrated to from Spain in the early 1900's, where they worked on the Ewa Plantation. Gabe always liked to joke that he was born on a banana leaf, and his mother wrapped him in a leaf and went on working.
He served in the Army during WWII, in the 258 Signal Corp. There he handled messenger pigeons to send messages to our troops through enemy lines. After his discharge he returned to San Leandro, where he made his home.
He retired from General Foods in 1974. His passion was raising homing pigeons, and he turned this passion into a hobby. He spent his retiring years raising his birds, traveling, and spending time with family.
He is preceded in death by his mother Catrina, his father Gabriel Sr. and his sister Dorothy. He leaves behind his wife Shirlietta of 15 years, whom he adored, his grandchildren Bob Souza and Debbie Bowie and many nieces and nephews.
Gabe earned the love and respect from all who knew him, just by being himself. He left 101 years of wonderful memories.
A visitation will be held on Thursday Nov. 21 at Holy Angels Funeral & Cremation Center, 1051 Harder Rd. Hayward, starting at 5:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday Nov. 22 at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
