Long time Oakland native Guiseppe Bennett, 95, passed away May 17 with his loving family at his side.
Zep, a proud veteran of World War II, served with the U.S. Coast Guard as a Radio Man, 1st Class, from 1942-45 in the Pacific on the CGC Shawnee. After the war, he met Dora Belle Hunter and married in 1947.
He retired in 1980 from Montgomery Ward as Field Service Supervisor. Zep had a passion for radio and television, square dancing and traveling.
Zep was preceded in death by his wife Dora and siblings Frances Mitchell, Ruby Christ, Radford Franke and Carlo Bennett. He is survived by his children Mary Bennett-Heeb of Oakland, Paul Bennett and his wife Rhoda of Albany, Tom Bennett and his wife Karen of Stamford, CT, James Bennett and his wife Tracy of Pinole and Ann Bennett-Beals and her husband Ron Beals of San Leandro, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be at 10:00AM on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Oakland. Please send contributions in Guiseppe's memory to St. Lawrence O'Toole Church or the Coast Guard Foundation.
