1955 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Howard (nee' Houston) Marzell Jr. Obituary
Howard Marzell (nee' Houston), Jr.
October 12, 1955 - July 13, 2014
Resident of Oakland
Howard Marzell (neé Houston), Jr. affectionately known as "Bro-Bro", was born on October 12, 1955 in Oakland, CA to Howard Marzell Sr. and Jodene Alexander (neé Houston). Jodene met Robert Houston during Howard's infancy. They fell in love and were married in 1956. After their union, Robert adopted Howard. Until his mid-20's, Howard publicly and legally identified himself as Howard Houston as a measure of love and respect and in honor to and of his dad. As the eldest of five children, Howard brought an abundance of joy to his parents. Howard attended public school within the Oakland Unified School District where he excelled in mechanics and sports and acquired a reputation for being a person who abhorred conflict and was willing to help anyone he felt was in need or trouble.
In 1974, Howard married Karla Gadison; in 1985 married Beverly Hall. He enjoyed celebrating personal milestones and gatherings with his four children: Tania Monique, Remy Maurice, Velvet Lenae, and Lelund David. Howard worked as a Janitor with Safeway Grocery Stores and a line operator with American Can Co. and relocated to Nevada in 1980 where he worked as a Janitor and Welder for General Motors for nearly 10 years. He returned to California in 1990 and worked on the assembly line for Saab Motors and later, N.U.M.M.I. After his retirement from N.U.M.M.I., Howard relocated to New Hampshire for a few years, then to Silver Springs, Nevada before returning to California. Howard loved his family, enjoyed hanging out with his friends, and "drinking a cold one".
He enjoyed writing letters and sending greeting cards to his loved ones and his friends. He enjoyed going to flea markets and swap meets to buy handmade leather goods and vintage records. His calm demeanor was seen in the fact he would never drive faster than 30mph and never speak a negative word towards anyone. He enjoyed fishing in the Delta and would use his special worms he personally fed cornmeal. He regularly enjoyed riding his bike and listening to Sam Cooke and Al Green.
Howard will be missed by many as he left an irreplaceable impression on the lives of others. Howard was preceded in death by his dad, Robert Houston, and his biological father, Howard Marzell Sr. He leaves to mourn his four children: Tania M. Mitchell (Lance), Remy M. Houston, Velvet L. Davis-Berry, and Lelund D. Marzell; his grandchildren: Layla Mitchell, Lance R. Mitchell II, Lanai Mitchell, and Saniya Berry; his mother, Jodene Houston; his siblings: Ronald Houston, Kenneth Houston, Anslea L. Houston, and Robbe Houston; his nieces: Justina S. Houston and Jessica L. Houston-Rellamas; his nephew, Robbe A. Houston, Jr; his great-nieces: Kailea Rellamas, Leeah Jo Houston, Ellah Rae Houston-Rellamas, his great-nephew Jackson James Ike'Ika Rellamas, and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.
