Irving A. Biron Obituary
Irving A. Biron Jan. 7, 1924 - April 7, 2014. Resident of Oakland A veteran of World War II, Irv passed away on April 7, 2014. He was born in Oakland, January 7, 1924 to Mary and John Biron. Irv graduated from Roosevelt High School in January, 1942, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November. While serving on the carrier USS Block Island (CVE-21) he survived the sinking of the vessel by a German U-boat on May 29, 1944. Irv and many of the survivors later went aboard the second Block Island (CVE-106), serving in the Pacific. Attending annual reunions of both ships' men was one of Irv's greatest pleasures. He loved taking great photographs of all those involved. Following the war, Irv was a dedicated employee of Pabco, Emeryville, for 20 years, followed by 30 years of service at Sears Roebuck in Oakland. In addition to his parents, Irv was preceded in death by his wife Mary (1991), son Kenneth (2003), brother 2nd Lt. Leo Biron, U.S. Army Air Corps (1945), sister-in-law Bernice Collins (2007), nephew Marshall Collins (2008), and dear friend and companion Charis Hicks Crist (2005) of Phoenix. Survived by a host of friends and relatives including nephew Clifford Castagnola, niece Bernadine Castagnola Carpenter, and godson Robert Carpenter, both of Houston. A special thanks to the caring staff at Salem Lutheran Home - you made Irv's last year worthwhile. As he would say: "I had a ball!" A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, April 11, 2014, beginning with a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. in the St. Gabriel Chapel of Holy Angels Funeral Center, on the grounds of St. Joseph Cemetery, 2540 Church Lane, San Pablo, CA, to be followed by a funeral service at 11:00 A.M. and the burial at St. Joseph Cemetery.
