Jack Albert Merritt passed away Friday night, February 21st 2014.
He was born in San Francisco, CA and grew up in Ashland, OR. He attended both the University of Oregon where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science, and the University of Washington, graduating with a BA in Librarianship.
In 1950 he married Arlette Morrison in Eugene, OR. They had five children and were later divorced.
He served in the Navy as a navigator in WWII, and the Korean Conflict.
He worked as a purchasing agent for various government and educational organizations and retired in 1991 from the University of California at Berkeley.
In 2005 he moved to Grand Junction, CO to be near his daughter.
His goal after retirement was to make people smile, and anyone who met him knows that he certainly succeeded in that endeavor.
He is survived by his children, Karen (James) Sturgill of Grand Junction, CO; Duncan (Agnes) Merritt of Vallejo, CA; Webster (Lois) Merritt of Oakland, CA; Daniel Merritt of Oakland, CA; and grandchildren Nicholas Merritt and Tamara Romero.
His daughter Hilary (Merritt) Romero preceded him in death.
Per his wishes, no memorial service will be held.
Following cremation, he will be interred at the Veterans Cemetery in Grand Junction CO.
