Resident of Alameda
Born and raised outside of Chicago, Illinois, Joyce Schnell Linney, a 33-year resident of Alameda, passed away peacefully at age 86 after complications from a fall and a stroke. The daughter of the late William and Bertha Schnell, Joyce enjoyed 61 years of marriage to the late Thomas Linney (1923-2013). They are survived by their 3 beloved sons: Kenneth (his wife Carol), Douglas (his wife Susan), and Warren. Joyce was a cherished grandmother to Aileen, Olivia, Erin, Brietta, and Spenser.
As a journalism major, Joyce attended Arizona State College in Tempe. She transferred to U.C. Berkeley as an English major, graduating in 1951. She and husband Tom and their active sons enjoyed 35 years of sailing on the Bay and Delta in their Columbia 29 sloop, the Double Eagle.
After raising her family, Joyce discovered her talent as an artist specializing in watercolors of scenes from Baja California where she and Tom spent several winters near Tripui. Some of her artwork can be seen at the Alameda Art Association Art Gallery of which she was an active member and contributor. Gardening was another favorite activity. Her thriving and colorful flowers grace the grounds of Crown Harbor.
Joyce will be dearly missed by her large extended family, many friends, and her beautiful flowers.
Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass on Saturday, January 25 at 12:00p.m. at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, 1427 6th Street, Alameda. Donations may be made in her memory to the JDRF organization for Type 1 diabetes research in San Francisco: 49 Stevenson Street, Suite 1200, San Francisco, CA 94105, (415) 977-0360.
