1930-2012
Resident of Alameda
Roy Poczik passed away Saturday, November 17, 2012 at his home in Alameda. Born in South Bend, Indiana to Vincent and Mary (Madarass) Poczik, he graduated in 1948 from Woodrow Wilson High School in South Bend.
Roy served in the Air Force from 1951-56 and was stationed at Parks Air Force Base in Pleasanton, CA. Roy received his associate of arts degree in accounting from Oakland City College. He began his career as Comptroller for Skaggs-Stone Corporation in Oakland from 1956-67 and then as Director of Computer Systems at Matson Navigation Company from 1967-69.
Roy opened a new chapter in his professional life when he joined the Grubb Company, Oakland, CA. in 1969 as an associate real estate agent. He later opened his own company, Transcentury Realty Masters in Montclair district of Oakland and served as broker and principle with Transcentury Realty Masters from 1973 to 1983. In later years, Roy obtained his certification as a Financial Planner.
Roy loved sailing with friends and family aboard his beautiful Cheoy Lee boat, Moonshadow, spending summers in the California Delta with dear friends and family. Along with sailing, he enjoyed many athletic endeavors including competitive basketball at the Oakland YMCA and lively games of Ping-Pong. He was an avid reader, traveled throughout the world and for many years enjoyed yearly trips to his vacation home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Roy was a long-time member of the Montclair Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Oakland Yacht Club and very active with the Alameda Dragon Flyers boat racing team. An Alameda resident from 1991 to 93 after being displaced by the Oakland Hills fire of October 1991, he returned to Alameda in 2000.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Kit Land; daughter Nancy Hansen and son Sean Kerrel; grandchildren Jennifer, Robert, and Michael; great granddaughters Myra and Layla, and numerous nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by brothers Vincent, Joseph and Charles Poczik.
A service to celebrate Roy's life is scheduled Saturday, Dec. 15, 2:00 p.m., at Montclair Presbyterian Church (5701 Thornhill Dr., Oakland, CA 94611, 510-339-1131). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Roy may be directed to: Habitat for Humanity (www.habitat.org), Women for Women International (www.womenforwomen.org) or Montclair Presbyterian Church (www.mpcfamily.org).
