Richard C.S. Lee
September 12, 1917 - February 25, 2014
Resident of San Leandro
Dr. Richard C.S. Lee, age 96, passed away in San Leandro, CA on February 25, 2014. He was born on September 12, 1917, in Hanalei, Kauai, in the then Territory of Hawaii. He and his older brothers, Thomas and Willie, lost their parents at a very young age, and they essentially raised each other, through childhood and their teens, working whatever jobs they could find, while attending school. Though he had no parents to guide him, Dr. Lee knew the importance of education, and worked hard to put himself through high school and beyond. Dr. Lee was a
World War II
veteran who served proudly in the United States
from 1941 to 1945 in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. During those years, he was also an avid and successful amateur boxer competing in numerous military competitions. He married Winifred Lee, whom he met in the Fiji Islands in 1944. After the war, he attended and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons in San Francisco (now known as the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry), where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1949. From 1949 to 2001, he operated a dental practice on Estudillo Avenue in San Leandro. He particularly enjoyed treating young children, including his own five. Dr. Lee resided in Oakland for 55 years. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, golfer, and loved cats and dogs. He is survived by his children, Rosina, Rick, Robert, and Russell Lee; grandchildren, Nicole, Doug, Elaine, Marissa, Craig, and Kenny Lee; great-grandchildren, Jade, Kiana, and Taylor Lee. He is predeceased in death by his son Ronald Lee. In furtherance of his belief in the importance of education and his selfless dedication to his kids, he encouraged, guided, and supported their education through college and beyond. His children believe he is the Best Dad they could have ever asked for. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the East Bay SPCA in Oakland. The family expresses their deep appreciation to the staff of Rose Gate Assisted Living for the wonderful, compassionate care they gave our Dad in the last few years of his life. Military Honors will be held on Monday April 7th 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery 5810 Midway Rd. Dixon, CA.
