Willard W. Barksdale passed away March 29, 2012, after a long battle with kidney disease.
Willard was born January 22, 1925 in Guilford College, North Carolina. He lived there until he joined the United States Navy in 1943. After serving in the Navy, Willard went on to join the United States Army in 1954. He courageously served in the Korean War, World War II & Vietnam. After his active service, Willard moved to New Jersey, where he worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs in New York. In 1984, Willard moved to Oakland, California, where he worked as a legal assistant for the Alameda Naval Air Station, from which he retired.
He had many joys in his life including family, traveling, music and reading, particularly black history.
Later in life, Willard converted to Buddhism. He was a devout practitioner, and an active member of Soka Gakkai International-USA.
Willard is survived by a son Willard W. Barksdale Jr, 4 daughters, Sally Barksdale, Evelyn Barksdale-Bilal, Elly June Barksdale and Ingrid Barksdale as well as 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Willard was cremated April 6th, 2012
