Mack Gordon Parsons, Jr.Mack Gordon Parsons, Jr., 83, of Hilton Head Island, S.C. passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2014. He was born to the late Gordon and Beulah Parsons in Nashville, TN. on October 3, 1930. He graduated Issac-Litton High School, Nashville, TN. and attended Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. prior to graduating with a degree in civil engineering from the University of Tennessee in Nashville, TN. He served in the United States Marine Corps, First Marine Division, during the Korean War and was awarded a number of medals, including the Purple Heart. His career path led him to a large North Carolina construction company, the George W. Kane Company. Then he was involved in two international construction companies, the first being the North Carolina based Nello L. Teer, which operated in a global sphere. Later he became deputy chief operating officer of Perini International Corporation. A wholly owned subsidiary of Perini Corporation, it is one of the largest construction companies in the United States. His particular field of geographic responsibility was the Middle East, the Far East and Africa. Mack had a certain presence that inspired confidence in others and was highly respected in his field. World travelers, the Parsons lived in the Arabian Gulf for three years in Doha, Qatar and in Greece for five years. While living in Greece Mack commissioned a 40-foot sailing sloop that was built in England. They named her "Kinderspiel"; she flew an American flag. When Mack's schedule allowed, they spent idyllic hours sailing the Mediterranean. When possible, they flew to their "favorite place in the world," Hilton Head Island, SC. They retired on Hilton Head from Perini International Corporation in 1985 at which time Mack formed Parsons Construction Company. They became early supporters of Providence Presbyterian Church where they were charter members. Mack served as the chairman of the building committee for the new church on Cordillo Parkway. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Roberts (John) of Waxhall, NC. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty, his children by a previous marriage, Susan Parsons Conrad (Reed) of Eugene, OR., David Parsons of Antioch, TN., (Beth), Daniel Parsons of Vancouver, WA., Nancy Parsons of Stafford, TX. and stepson Frank Rambo of Marietta, GA., brother George Parsons (Alice) of Pittsboro, NC., an aunt, Clara Bedingfield of Nashville, TN., and grandchildren Sam and Andy Conrad of Eugene, OR., and Luke Parsons of Antioch, TN. A memorial service will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Providence Presbyterian Church, 171 Cordillo Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928 or to a .
