Attica - Allen Mason Rand, 75, Attica, passed away at his home on Sunday, February 10, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. after a 11 month battle with cancer.
Allen was born on October 19, 1937, in Miami, Okla., to Dorothy Mason Rand and Burke Brown Rand. Allen graduated from Wiley High School in Terre Haute and attended Indiana University, Bloomington. In 1961, he joined the Active Army Reserve, serving active duty for six months and the in the Army Reserve for the remainder of his enlistment.
On September 2, 1961, Allen married Amelia H. Partington in Terre Haute. She survives.
He began his career in retailing at Meis Bros. in Terre Haute continuing to Gregg's Dept. Store in Lima, Ohio. In April 1966 Allen joined General Telephone Co. in New Philadelphia, Ohio, and continued to Marion, Ohio, Cadiz, Ohio, back to Marion, Ohio, Ft. Wayne and retired from GTE in Westfield, as a Special Projects Supervisor in GTE Data Services in Sept. 1993. Allen was instrumental in developing system programming during the early years of computer programming for GTE.
In the years when professionals were moved often and called "Professional Migrants", the family moved every 18 months for several years. Home was in Terre Haute, Lima, Ohio, Marion, Ohio (3 times), Dover, Ohio, Cadiz, Ohio, Ft. Wayne, Noblesville and in 2001, Attica.
In retirement, Allen was an avid gardener. His garden was one of the gardens featured in the annual "Day of Arts and Gardens" in Attica in June 2010. An active member of the Fountain County Landmarks, Allen enjoyed being a docent for tours of Cottrell Village, a restored village in Attica. Friends and family called him with things that didn't work: from broken toys and toilets to computers that stumped the operators, he considered it a challenge to fix things.
Surviving besides his wife, Amelia, are a son, Daniel Rand of Marion, Ohio; a daughter, Sara Julane Pycke (Jeffrey), Attica, and a son Curtis Allen (Lisa Kleck) Rand, Leawood, Kan.; a brother, Robert, of Terre Haute; a sister, Julane Helen Soares (Edward) of Knoxville, Tenn. A son, Stuart Avery, preceded him in death at 7 years of age in 1970. Grandchildren surviving are Bryan, Bradley, Danielle and Logan Rand; Eli Merriman, Stuart, Carter and Cole Rand. All were the delight of Allen's life as were Helen and George Harrison that adopted him as "Papa Allen".
Visitation will be held at the Attica First Lutheran Church on Thursday, Feb. 14, from 12:30 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Carolyn Lesmeister officiating. Online condolences may be sent to: www.mausfuneralhome.com. Internment of ashes will be made at a later time.
