Barbara "Skippy" (Thompson) Nicoson, 68

Barbara "Skippy" (Thompson) Nicoson, 68, passed away at her home in Cory, Indiana, on Friday morning, June 13, 2014. She was born to J Gilbert and Wilma Thompson in Lafayette, Indiana, on October 8, 1945.

Barbara graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School and earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Purdue University, where she met her husband Jon. She taught first grade in Thorntown, Indiana, for one year before devoting the rest of her life to homemaking and operating Nicoson Farms, Inc., of which she was president.

She was a member of Cory Zion Church where she taught the preschool Sunday school class and served in the church nursery. For many years prior to 1997 she taught and coordinated teaching of a Sunday morning preschool class at Memorial United Methodist Church in Terre Haute.

Barbara led Brownies and Girl Scouts for five years, guiding the girls as they learned life skills.

She also helped to lead Y-Me, a breast cancer support group, where she found dear friends and opportunities to serve for over twenty years.

She read avidly, often spoke up about political issues, researched family genealogy, and had a soft spot for orphaned kittens. She introduced her family to children's literature by authors such as C.S. Lewis, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and A.A. Milne. Her greatest joy was in watching her children and grandchildren pursue and reach their personal goals.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years Jon E. Nicoson; daughter Amy (Lee) Haney of Maineville, Ohio; son David (Kristen) Nicoson of Indianapolis; grandchildren Rachel, Ellen, and Martha Haney, Conner Nicoson, and Raistlin Cox; sister Marilyn Sue (Dean) Harper of Louisville; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family members. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be held at Cory Zion Church (3½ miles west of SR 59 on CR 300S) on Tuesday, June 17, from 3:00 to 6:00. A memorial celebration will be held at 6:00, Pastor Jared Odle officiating. A fellowship meal will follow. Barbara chose to give her body to the Indiana University Medical Center. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Cory Zion Church.
