Bernard August Hoefer, 90, of West Lafayette, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2013 in the Indiana Veterans' Home.
He was born on January 19, 1923 in Lafayette, to the late August B. and Bernadine (Snelting) Hoefer.
Bernard served his country in the United States Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945. He received 4 bronze stars during his service.
On September 27, 1947, he married Neva May Marion in Lafayette at St. Lawrence Catholic Church; she preceded him in death on July 18, 2002.
Bernard retired at the age of 62 from Hoffine's Garage where he worked as the body and fender man. He previously worked for several area dealerships.
He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church where he was involved in the Men's Club. He also belonged to the Eagles, VFW, and Knights of Columbus. Bernard enjoyed working on cars, assisting with bingo at St. Ann's, and fixing things.
Bernard is survived by his children, Terry (Toni) Hoefer, Susan Hoefer, Joey Hoefer, all of Lafayette, Sally (Steve) Dreyer of Indianapolis, and Robert (Patti) Hoefer of Bradford, NH; daughter-in-law, Theresa Hoefer of Lafayette; and his sister, Margaret Mary Schilling of Lafayette. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Bernie, Louis, Nikki, Mandy, Sarah, Meredith, Ellen, Casey, and Zach, and 12 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Hoefer and siblings, Anna Marie Behler, Leona Cutter, Francis Hoefer, and George Hoefer.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Chapel with Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church with Father Dominic officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Ann's Soup Kitchen in memory of Bernard.
