Donald E. Banes, 77, of Delphi, died Sat.-Nov. 16, 2013 at 3:00pm at his residence, after an extended illness. He was born Aug. 21, 1936 in Chalmers, IN, to the late Harry & Thelma Ruth Miller Banes. His marriage was to Sophia Ochoa in Reynolds, on June 27, 1959, and she survives. He was a 1954 Chalmers High School graduate, and received a degree in Electronics from Valpo Tech. He worked for 20 years, and retired from Purdue University, in the physics department, then for the former Eli Lilly & Co., for 20 years, retiring from there also. He also worked at Sears for 15 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delphi. He volunteered with his son's Boy Scout Troop; enjoyed tinkering, exploring with his family down by the creek, enjoying nature and the simple things. He liked to cook, and dearly loved his family, and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving: wife-Sophia Banes of Delphi; daughter-Janice & Don Runk of Battle Ground; sons: Ken & Karla Banes of Delphi, Rob S. Banes of Tenino, WA, Russ & Michele Banes of Granger, Terry & Sherry Banes of Brookston; brothers: Paul L. Banes of Monticello, George W. Banes of Lafayette; stepsister: Nancy & Lloyd Cripe of Delphi; stepbrother: Phil & Janice Girton of Delphi; 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by 2 brothers, Stanley & Robert; stepfather John Girton.
