Ernest W. Ray, Jr., 92

Ernest W. Ray, Jr., 92, passed away June 5, 2014 at the Mayflower Place in West Yarmouth, MA following a brief illness. Born in Bartow County, GA December 22, 1921 to Ernest W. and Flora (Gaines) Ray, he joined the US Navy in 1942 as an Apprentice Seaman and served with distinction as Electrician's Mate, 2nd Class during WWII aboard USS LST 78 in the Gilbert Islands, the Marshall Islands, Dutch New Guinea and the Marianas Islands in the Pacific Theater through1945. Ray married Beverly J. Soller June 22, 1949 and she survives. He graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. in Agriculture in 1950 and spent the next five decades in West Lafayette, IN. "Ernie" was a well-respected and admired Agent for Western & Southern Life Insurance Company from 1953-1978, a devoted member of Trinity Methodist Church and a tireless worker in its community outreach programs, and an early-morning golfer on most courses within driving distance of his home on Connolly Street. In addition to his wife, Ray is survived by his daughters, Melanie Ray (husband David Hahn) of Los Angeles, CA, Rebecca Ray (husband Sahap Turkoglu) of Narlihopur, Turkey and Leslie Ann Gordon (husband Richard) of Waquoit, MA, and three grandchildren, Matthew Ray Gordon, Sarah Rose Gordon and Nuri Ray Turkoglu. A private service with family will be followed by interment at Spring Vale Cemetery in Lafayette, IN. If so desired, a donation of blood or plasma to your local hospital or the Red Cross in Ray's memory would be greatly appreciated by his family.
