Dr. Gary Edward Blau of West Lafayette, IN, passed away Thursday evening January 30, 2014 at IU Arnett Hospital, Lafayette, IN, from complications related to his long battle with multiple myeloma. Gary was born October 4th, 1940 in Kitchener, Ontario Canada to the late Edward (Eddie) and Betty (Rauser) Blau of Ontario. Gary was a devout Christian and lived his life with utmost integrity. He had a passion for life and making a difference in the world. His cared deeply for others and used his talents to help others realize their full potential. Gary was a wonderful and caring teacher and mentor who enjoyed teaching most by doing, by working along-side students or junior colleagues, at Dow AgroSciences, Carnegie-Mellon University and Purdue University. Gary enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, traveling the world and spending summers and entertaining with his wife Jan at their summer home in Ontario. Gary was raised in Canada and received his BA Sc degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo Ontario Canada in Chemical Engineering and his MSc and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University. He retired from Dow AgroSciences in 1998 as a Dow Fellow and founded The Modeling Connection as President and CEO. He also held a position of Visiting Professor of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University.Gary was a visionary that could apply the fundamentals of science and math to solve complex problems. He was energetically championing the use of models and Bayesian methodology to predict drug treatment regimen tailored to the characteristics of individual patients. His ultimate goal was to change the way that cancer patients' dose regimen was chosen to a way that tailored the dose to the individuals' personal needs. His ideas have been planted; may they take root.
He is survived by his wife Jan Myer Blau of West Lafayette, IN; three sons: James Blau, Timothy (Beth) Blau both of Michigan, Kenneth Blau of Wisconsin and five grandchildren, Kira, Luc, Kameron, Lily and Kyle of MI, all of whom he loved dearly. A Celebration of Gary's life will be held at 11:30 am Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Covenant Church at 211 Knox Dr. West Lafayette, IN 47906 with Rev. Dr. David Henderson officiating. Immediately following the service will be a time of fellowship. A private family burial will take place at Musselman Cemetery in Camden. In lieu of flowers those wishing may contribute in Gary's name to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation at 383 Main Ave 5th Floor Norwalk, CT. 06851.
