George Blackburn Obituary
George E. Blackburn, 93

George E. Blackburn, 93, of Middlefork, Indiana, passed away at 12:08 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Wesley Manor in Frankfort, Indiana. He was born July 7, 1920, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis to William E. and Clara (Mode) Blackburn, who preceded him in death.

After his family moved to a farm near Elwood, he graduated from Elwood High School in 1938. George attended Purdue University which is where he met his future wife, Betty Gene Stong, who preceded him in death in 2007. They married on September 1, 1940, and were married 67 years. George was employed by Alcoa Aluminum Company in Lafayette for 42 years beginning as a general helper and ending his career as production supervisor of the extrusion department. In June, 1944, George was drafted into the Marines and was sent to Paris Island, South Carolina. Upon his release from service, he returned to work at Alcoa and also farmed part-time in Middlefork.

George was a member of Irvington Methodist Church in Indianapolis, American Legion Post #0777, a 50-year member of F & AM Masonic Lodge #641 in Beard, and the Retired Employees of Alcoa. He had also served as trustee of Warren Township for several years and, along with five other township trustees, formed Clinton Central School Corporation in 1957, one of the first school consolidations in Indiana. George placed great value on education, and he continued his interest in providing a good education for all children by becoming president of the first school board for CCSC. With his encouragement, all three of his children, George Michael Blackburn, Patricia Jean McQuinn, and John Alan Blackburn, graduated from both Clinton Central Junior-Senior High School and Purdue University.

In addition to his two surviving children, George is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Blackburn; a sister, Carolyn Lasley; and grandchildren, Scott Blackburn, Mark Blackburn, Stephanie McQuinn, Matthew McQuinn, Elizabeth Blackburn and James Blackburn and 10 great-grandchildren. One son, G. Michael Blackburn, one grandson, Jason Blackburn, two brothers, William Blackburn and Gerald Blackburn, and one sister, Lura Davidson, preceded him in death.
