Howard Ayers Jr., 82, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Franciscan St. Francis South Health in Indianapolis.
He was born May 17, 1932, to Col. Howard Ayers Sr. and Sarah B. Hege Ayers in Hammond. He married Joan M. Haupt Ayers on June 27, 1964, and she survives in Shelbyville.
Other survivors include son, Howard "Chip" Ayers III and wife, Lisa, of Greensburg; sister, Patricia A. Gallucci and husband, Michael, of Los Angeles, California; and grandchildren, Paige Corbett and husband, Justin, of Cicero and Chelsea Perry of Whiteland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John R. Ayers and infant daughter, Sasha J. Ayers
Mr. Ayers had lived in the Shelbyville area since 1973, after moving from Lafayette.
He graduated from Tokyo American School in 1950. He attended Purdue University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi.
He was a woodworker and cabinetmaker. He owned and operated Americana Cabinet Co. of Shelbyville, for several years. He also was a partner in Continental Kitchens for several years.
Mr. Ayers attended Crossroads Community Church. He was former president of Lafayette Optimist Club, and he was a lifetime Endowment Member of the National Rifle Association.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2014, at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, Shelbyville, IN 46176.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014, at the funeral home, with Pastors Andy Lee and Mike Lockwood officiating.
Entombment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2014, at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette with Maus Funeral Home, Attica, in charge of those arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Shelby County Friends of the NRA or Crossroads Community Church in care of the funeral home.
