James L. "Jim" Roland, 93, formerly of Delphi, died Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at 6:31 a.m., at Mulberry Health and Retirement Community. He had been a resident there for the past 2 years, and in failing health. He was born December 1, 1919, in Veedersburg, to the late Freeman and Bessie Roaks Roland. He was married to Marjorie M. Combs in Delphi, on September 29, 1973, and she preceded him in death on September 2, 2002. He attended high school in Veedersburg. He worked for 16 years at Purdue University for the grounds and service department, retiring in 1985. He was in the 3-C Camp (Civil Conservation Corp) during the late 1930's, for 2 years. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and playing horseshoes.
Surviving: Daughter, Virginia Searcy, Williamsport, Daughter: Mary Margaret (Jim) Fitz Simons, Clarks Hill. Son: James L. (Bonnie) Roland Jr., Rosedale. Stepdaughters: Donna (Harold) Fogarasi, Delphi, Norma (Bill) Martin, Lafayette. Stepson: Dennis (Kim) Lynch, Lafayette. 10 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a brother; and son-in-law, Kenneth.
Services: Friends may call Friday from 5 p.m. until his funeral service at 7 p.m., at Abbott Funeral Home, Delphi. Pastor James L. Roland Jr officiating. Private family burial at IOOF Memorial Gardens, Pittsburg. Memorial contributions to Natalie's Second Chance Animal Shelter, envelopes available at the funeral home.
