Janice Yeoman Horner, 93, died at 6:48 p.m. on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at the Forum at the Crossing, Indianapolis, Indiana, due to Alzheimer's Disease.
Janice was born in Hastings, Nebraska, August 10, 1920. She was the daughter of the late George V. and Lida C. (Wherry) Yeoman.
Jan grew up in Wilmette, Illinois. She graduated from New Trier Township High School in 1938 and Purdue University in 1942. She married the late John C. Horner in 1943 and they moved to West Lafayette. She was a vocational home economics teacher at Jefferson High School from 1957-1968. She was a member at Central Presbyterian Church since 1946 serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, Choir Member and Elder.
Jan was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was President of theLafayette Alumnae Association twice and a longtime member of the House Board of Gamma Delta Chapter, Purdue University.
Jan was very involved in the Lafayette community over the years. She was a Director on the Purdue University Alumni Association Board, President and Board member for the South Side Community Center, Board member of the Youth Services Bureau and the Family Services Board. She served on the Board for the Citizens Committee on Drugs and Alcohol, the Ad Hoc Committee for Men and Women in Crisis. She led the study for improvements and expansion of the Tippecanoe County Jail representing United Stand for Children and Youth. She was the Coordinator of Volunteers for Special Events at New Directions Center, Alcohol Rehabilitation for Men. She was a volunteer for Lafayette Urban Ministry.
Jan was known for her cooking expertise for family and friends. She edited Recipes to Remember, a Wabash Valley Keepsake Collection. She was a 4-H and State Fair judge for food and clothing.
Jan was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, John C. "Jack"Horner, her son Steven Kendall Horner and her brother George W. Yeoman, Fairfield, CA.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean Horner, West Lafayette, IN and Lynn Horner Swingle (Mrs. Robert S. II) Zionsville, IN; three grandchildren, Ann Swingle Lauri (Mrs. Christian M.), Carmel, IN, Robert S. Swingle III, Seattle, WA., Mark A. Horner, Las Vegas, NV.; and two great-grandchildren, Luke R. VanMeter and Katherine D. VanMeter, Carmel, IN.
A memorial service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church, Lafayette, IN Friday, January 10, 2014 at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m., with Rev. Dr. Jeff Cover officiating. Inurnment will be private at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Lafayette Urban Ministry's Emergency Relief Fund.
