Leon Martin Fleeger, 73

Leon Martin Fleeger, 73 of Lafayette, Indiana, died June 29, 2014 at Mulberry Health and Retirement Community.

He was born May 31, 1941 in Winamac, Indiana to Helen (Brady) Fleeger and the late Charles Fleeger. Leon graduated from Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana. Leon married the former Marilyn Sandberg in 1962 and they later divorced.

Leon served in the Navy as a signalman from 1959-1963. He was stationed in San Diego, California. After his time in the Navy he returned to the Midwest.

Leon became a Lafayette City Firefighter for 28 years, retiring in 1999. Leon worked as a Lafayette School Corporation Bus Driver for many years until his illness in January 2014. Leon loved the kids on his bus route, but also really enjoyed the bus trips for all the sporting events, especially the golf team, as that was a favorite hobby for him too. Leon enjoyed fishing and watching Georgia Tech, Denver University and Purdue women's basketball. One of his greatest loves was piloting his own plane. Leon was known to be a great cook and everyone loved his chili and pizza.

He is survived by his companion of many years, Anne Brickler. Leon was also survived by his mother, Helen Fleeger and a brother Don Fleeger. His children, Annette Smith (Dave); Jeff Fleeger (Joanna); Kristina Oswalt (John); and Jennifer DeLong (Bob). His grandchildren, Kelsey Oswalt; Kandance DeLong; Emily Zanker (Jeff); Owen Patrick and Corrine Oswalt.

Leon loved his dogs Desi and Francie and they will miss him very much.

Visitation will be held 4-6 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Hippensteel Funeral Home. A Fireman's Last Alarm will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, followed by the funeral service with Celebrant Carla Ellis officiating and concludes with military honors by the U.S. Navy and the American Legion Post #11.
