Margaret McAuley Preckel, 95, of West Lafayette, died Sunday, June 30, 2013 in her home. Born on March 14, 1918, in Huntington, PA, she was the daughter of the late Auley and Bernice Veitch McAuley. She graduated in 1937 from Florida Southern College, Lakeland, FL, and in 1942 from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, with a Ph.D. in organic chemistry.
She was employed by Hercules, Inc. in Wilmington, DE, for two years. She taught at Frostburg State University for 24 years, retiring in 1989 as professor of chemistry. She was a member of the American Chemical Society and Alpha Chi Omeaga.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph F. Preckel. She is survived by three daughters, Ruth VanLaningham, Pittsburgh, Norma Gerard, Boston, and Jean Preckel, Morgantown, WV, a son, Paul Preckel, West Lafayette, IN, a brother, one sister, three grandchildren, and a great granddaughter.
The body will be cremated. A memorial visitation will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. with a time of remembrance at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Hippensteel Funeral Home.
