Mary Edith Banes, of Lafayette, Ind. Mary Edith Banes, born November 3, 1920, in Vermillion County, Indiana to Harlow P. Frist and Helen Eliza (Miller) Frist. Mary Edith grew up in Clinton, Indiana where her father ran the family farm. She attended Purdue University where she earned a bachelor's degree in education. She went on to earn her Master's degree through Indiana State University. It was at the end of her bachelor's degree that she met and married Russell E. Banes. In March of 1950, their daughter, Mary Lynn, arrived.
Mary Edith was an educator for 43 years. She taught several grades, but kindergarten was her calling. She was loved and respected throughout her career by students, parents, and staff. Mary was proud to have been able to touch the lives of so many people within her community through education.
Dedicated to higher learning for women, Mary Edith belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, Sigma Kappa, and Kappa Kappa Sigma, among others. She was a lifetime alumni of Purdue University. Her desire to promote the education and professionalism of women was of the utmost importance to her. She greatly enjoyed her years of service in these organizations.
Mary Edith Banes loved to travel. Upon retirement, she traveled throughout Europe and the United States. She loved to visit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary Edith was never one to waste time or coffee.
Mary Edith was an active member of Trinity Methodist church. She supported the various activities of the church and lived by the word of God.
Mary Edith found eternal life in the kingdom of the Lord on December 18, 2012. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Russell E. Banes, her brother Robert Frist and sister Betty Lou Mayes.
Mary Edith is survived by one daughter, Mary Lowell, of Kingman, Ariz.; two grandchildren survive Mary, including Eric Brian Skeel, of Milton, Fla., Brittney Lynn Varao; and her husband, Jeremy, of Las Vegas, Nev. She is also survived by her loving great-grandchildren, Alexis Skeel, Genna Varao and Noah Varao.
The family will receive friends during a visitation from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday morning, January 3, 2013, at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Directly following, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Mary Edith will be laid to rest in Tippecanoe Memorial Gardens in West Lafayette next to her husband Russell.
Mary Edith Banes was dearly loved and will be missed by her family.
