Newton E. High

Newton Eugene "Gene" High, 80, of West Lafayette, passed away at 10:25 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at IU Health. Born October 14, 1933 in Tompkinsville, KY, he was the son of the late Ollie and Carrie B. (Crabtree) High. He was a 1952 graduate of Romney High School, where he played all four years as one of the starting five on the basketball team, and attended Purdue University and Indiana University. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in December of 1962.

His marriage was to Nancy Verplank on April 17, 1955 in Lafayette and she survives. Gene was the Vice President of Verplank Concrete and Supply for over 25 years. He was a member of Elmwood Church of Christ, Lafayette Lodge #123 F & AM , West Lafayette Lodge # 724 F & AM, Downtown Gridiron Club, John Purdue Club, and Purdue Quarterback Club. He was a lifetime member of the Home Hospital Auxiliary and a Red Coat volunteer

Surviving with his wife are a son, Steven High of West Lafayette; two sisters, Vernel Swank (husband, Pete) of Lafayette and Louise Huddleston of Clarks Hill; and two grandchildren Sean and Ryan High both of Summerville, SC. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert High.

Visitation one hour prior to the 2 p.m. funeral service on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Hippensteel Funeral Home with Rev. Gilbert Kerrigan officiating.
