Phillip J. Scaletta, Jr., J.D. professor, author and attorney, who distinguished himself during a 55-year professional career in the insurance and business law professions, passed away on April 24, 2014. Phil was born on August 20, 1925 to Phillip J. and Louise Pelmulder Scaletta and raised in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
After high school graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 86th Infantry—Blackhawks—Division that conquered 220 miles of German territory, captured 53,354 German prisoners, and liberated the Attendorn German labor camp. Along with General Patton's 3rd Army and others they captured the Eagle's Nest where Hitler had planned his conquest of Europe. Phil was then shipped to the Philippines and was slated on the first wave of Japan. He was awarded the Bronze Star and medals by General Patton himself.
After his discharge he received his Bachelor of Science from Morningside College, Sioux City, IA, in 1948 and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1950. He was an adjuster and claims manager for Farmers Insurance for 16 years, a Professor of Business Law at Purdue University for 39 years including serving as Director of the Krannert Business School Master's Program, and practiced law with Mayfield and Brooks of Lafayette, IN. He is the coauthor of numerous articles and four textbooks with multiple editions, was president of American Business Law Association, received the Standard Oil (now Charles B. Murphy) Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award (Purdue's highest undergraduate teaching honor), is listed in the Purdue's Book of Great Teachers, and was licensed before the United States Supreme Court. He was a member of the Lafayette Country Club and his favorite hobby was golf.
Phil will be forever remembered by his wife of 67 years, Helen Beedle Scaletta; children, Phillip Ralph Scaletta J.D. (wife Lynn Gillespie) of Indianapolis, IN and Cheryl Diane Scaletta (husband Darrel J. Kesler Ph.D.) of Champaign, IL and Treasure Island, FL; grandchildren, Cheralyn E. Kesler, J.D. (husband Brian Parrott) of Champaign, IL, D. Phillip Kesler, J.D. (wife Kristin) of Byron, IL, Phillip "Rocky" Scaletta, J.D. (wife Lizz) of Indianapolis, IN, Anthony Scaletta (wife Linda Tang) of Los Angeles, CA, and Alexander Scaletta (partner Alice Lim, Pharm.D.) of Philadelphia, PA; and ten great-grandchildren. Phil and Helen have lived in West Lafayette, IN for the past 48 years.
A visitation will be held from 11 am until the time of funeral service at 12 pm (Noon), Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Tippecanoe Memorial Gardens, 1718 W 350 N, W. Lafayette, IN., with James Jones officiating. Elm Ridge Funeral Home is entrusted with care.
