Rick J. Barnhart, 62, Lafayette, passed away at the St. Elizabeth East Hospital, Lafayette, following an early onset of fronto-temporal Alzheimers, on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at 11:06 a.m.

Rick was born in Williamsport, IN, on July 10, 1952. He was the son of Leroy Edgar Barnhart of West Lebanon and the late Evelyn Louise (Stout) Barnhart. Rick was raised in Williamsport, graduating from Williamsport High School in 1970. He received his BS degree in elementary and physical education from Indiana State University in 1974. In 1993 he received his Masters Degree in Education from Purdue University. Rick began his first teaching position in Terre Haute. He later moved to Attica and owned and operated Fry Insurance Agency and opened AJ's Custard in Williamsport. He later moved to Lafayette and began teaching Physical Education at Glen Acres Elementary and Washington Elementary. After receiving his Masters degree in Education from Purdue, Rick became Principal at Washington Elementary from 1995 until its closing in 2004. He then was named Principal at Miller in 2004 and retired in 2009 due to his illness. Rick was known for his love of kick ball at the elementary schools. Each morning he enjoyed spending time with his students and joined them in a game of kick ball before the start of school. He was also known for passing out Tootsie Rolls in the hallways and his many character ties. Rick and Carla have been attending Brain Builders Circle of friends as their support group on this journey.

Rick grew up attending the Williamsport Christian Church and had been attending the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lafayette. He was a graduate of the Indiana Principal Leadership Academy; member of the YMCA Board from 1996-2001; YMCA Century Club member; IASP (Indiana Association of School Principals); Purdue Alumni Lifetime member; Moose Lodge # 2259 of Sebring, FL; Eagles Aerie # 347 of Lafayette; City of Lafayette Police Merit Board; City of Attica Volunteer Fireman. He enjoyed coaching youth basketball, baseball and softball. In 2001 Rick was named District IV Principal of the Year. His hobbies included golfing and carpentry. In 2000 Rick recorded a hole-in-one at the Lafayette Country Club.

Rick was married to Carla Neef in Lafayette. She survives. He also leaves behind his father, Leroy of West Lebanon; three children, Andy (Melissa) Barnhart, Greenwood, IN; Preston Barnhart and Amanda (Jonathan) Henry, both of Lafayette; his twin grandsons, Benjamin and Isaac; three brothers, Steve Barnhart, Bensenville, IL; Mike (Lori) Barnhart, Williamsport and Scott Barnhart, West Lebanon; three brother-in-laws, Rusty (Mandi) Neef, Veedersburg; Brad (Lori) Coffing, Attica and Craig (Pennie) Coffing, Williamsport. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn and a brother, Jeff Barnhart.

Friends may call at Soller-Baker Funeral Home, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette on Tuesday, September 2nd from 4:00 -8:00 p.m. Services will be held at Soller-Baker on Wednesday, September 3rd at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Stacey Littlefield officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Memory Gardens, Rockville, IN.
