Robert Edward Smith, 91, died on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana.
Mr. Smith was born to the late Edward and Elizabeth Nothoff Smith in rural Middleburgh Heights, Ohio in 1922, moving to Memphis Avenue in nearby Cleveland as a boy. Upon graduating from Rhodes High School in 1941, he began a 38 year career with the Ohio Bell Telephone Company, rising to top positions in management (Safety, Motor Vehicles, Cable Maintenance, and Construction), including several years with AT&T in New York City. He was a lineman and cable splicer in the Second World War between 1942 and 1945, serving in the North African, Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, and Po Valley campaigns for the 229th Signal Operations Company (with six Bronze Stars).
He married Maria De Sanctis in Florence, Italy on 2 July 1945; she preceded him in death in 2005.
Surviving are his children, James (Judy Aversano) Smith, Rita Smith, Elisabeth Smith, and Michael (Melinda Zook) Smith; grandchildren, James, Robert, and Lucia; and great grandchildren, Jacob and Leon.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta Smith, and sisters, Helen Smith, Mildred Lengle, and Arline Granger.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2 at Saint Patrick Church, 3602 Bridge Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44113; followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
