Rodney J. Gillen, 51, of Boswell passed away Saturday, October 5, 2013 after a very courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Danville, IL on September 20, 1962 to Jerry and Jo (Hughes) Gillen. Rod was a 1980 graduate of Benton Central High School. He married Gayle S. (Chafin) Gillen on August 8, 1981; she survives.
Rod worked at Demeter Inc. for one year as an outside supervisor at the grain elevator. He then moved to Dallas, Texas where he worked at Coca-Cola Bottlers as a Production Manager for two years. After moving back to Indiana, he worked at Landis & Gyr for three years as a Machine Operator. He then worked at Great Lakes Chemical for six years as a Chemical Operator. He then went to Eli Lilly/Evonik Degussa where he had worked for the past 19 years as a Chemical Operator and later as a Health and Safety Specialist.
He was an active first responder and volunteer firefighter for the Boswell-Grant Twp. Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years. Along with being a firefighter, he enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family & friends, especially his children & grandchildren and entertaining the community & friends in his "man house", which he was very proud of.
Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Courtney (Gillen) Metzinger (husband Curt) of Otterbein and Tara (Gillen) Garner (husband Nathan) of Remington; four grandchildren, who were the love of his life: Ian & Baylen Metzinger of Otterbein and Harlee & Pyper Garner of Remington; his brother and best friend Ryan (Karen) Gillen of Boswell; brothers-in-law Dave (Elaine) Chafin of Argyle, TX and Tim Chafin of California; nephews R.J. (Mindy) Gillen of West Lafayette, Cody Gillen of Boswell and Chris Chafin of Argyle, TX; also a great-nephew Drake Gillen of West Lafayette.
Friends may call Tuesday, October 8 at the Boswell Church of Christ from 4-8pm EDT. Services will be Wednesday, October 9 at 10am EDT at the Boswell Church of Christ, with John Morris officiating. Burial at Boswell Cemetery. Per Rod's request, casual attire only.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Boswell-Grant Twp. Volunteer Fire Department. Shoemaker Funeral Home, Otterbein assisting the family.
