Warren Howard Stevenson, 74, of Punta Gorda, Florida passed away March 25, 2013. He was born November 18, 1938 in Rock Island, Illinois and grew up in the small town of Stanford in central Illinois. In 1960 he graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and accepted a job in the aerospace industry. He returned to Purdue for graduate work and received the PhD in 1965, following which he joined the faculty of the School of Mechanical Engineering as assistant professor. He taught and conducted research in the field of advanced optical instrumentation and measurement techniques for use in research and manufacturing applications. Professor Stevenson received the US Senior Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 1973 and spent a year in Germany lecturing and conducting research. He was a member of several professional societies including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Optical Society of America, and the Laser Institute of America. He was elected as a Fellow of the LIA and served as their president in 1989.
Professor Stevenson held several administrative posts during his Purdue career including Interim Head of the School of Mechanical Engineering during one academic year. For the last several years of his tenure he was Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs in the College of Engineering. Among other responsibilities in this position he led the development of a master plan for new facilities in the College of Engineering. New buildings and major additions resulting from this effort include the additions to Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, Neil Armstrong Hall, the Birck Nanotechnology Center, the Bowen Laboratory and the Jischke Hall of Biomedical Engineering. Professor Stevenson was a member of Federated Church. Since retirement in 2003 he and his wife, Judy, resided in Punta Gorda, FL while returning to Lafayette during the summer months.
He is survived by his wife, their daughter, Kathy Thomas of Farmland, IN; son, Kevin of Loomis, CA and son, Kent of Coon Rapids MN and seven grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at a later sate at Federated Church in West Lafayette, IN. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Warren and Judy Stevenson Graduate Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University
