William S. Covington, 86

William S. "Bill" Covington, 86, of West Lafayette, formerly of Indianapolis, died at 12:02 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at St. Mary Healthcare Center in Lafayette. His marriage was to Phyllis Gish on September 5, 1948 at University Church in West Lafayette while he and his wife were students at Purdue and she survives. Bill and his wife had made their home in Indianapolis until moving to West Lafayette in September of 2010. Bill had served in the Pacific Theatre with the United States Army during WW II and went on to serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He received his bachelor's degree from the College of Aeronautics at Purdue University in 1951 and while a student at Purdue, Bill was a radio announcer for WBAA radio station. He worked 34 years for the Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors retiring in 1986 as an International Contractor for commercial engines. Bill was a former member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis where he had served as a Deacon and an Elder, a member of the Purdue Alumni Association, the American Legion Post #777 in Indianapolis, the National Rifle Association, the ARC of Marion County, the Pike Township Jaycees, and a past board member of the former Noble School in Indianapolis. In addition, Bill had volunteered at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for 22 years.

Surviving with his wife Phyllis, are their three children, Major General (Retired) Erika Dawn Covington Steuterman and her husband Ron of West Lafayette, Gina Capri Covington of Indianapolis, and Wm. Steven Covington of Lafayette, and two granddaughters, Erin and Jessica Steuterman. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and one brother.

Visitation 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Hippensteel Funeral Home in Lafayette. A second visitation will be held one hour prior to the 2:00 p.m. service Monday at Flanner & Buchanan Zionsville Mortuary in Zionsville. Interment to follow at Lincoln Memory Gardens with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wabash Center, 2000 Greenbush St., Lafayette, IN 47904 or to the .
