David Putnam Barnard Notice
Barnard, David Putnam Of 700 Quinlan Dr., Pewaukee, WI, died on Friday, June 6, 2014, at AngelsGrace Hospice, in Oconomowoc, at the age of 92. He was born on April 30, 1922, in Bethlehem, PA, to Charles Otis and Edith Ellen (nee Walton) Barnard. Barnard attended The Stout Institute, in Menomonie, WI, in 1940; left Stout in August 1942 to become a civilian employee of U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics and returned to UW-Stout in January 1946. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from UW-Stout. In 1955 he earned a doctorate (Ed.D) from Indiana University with a major in Instructional Systems Technology. On May 28, 1942, in Menomonie, he married Kathleen (Doris) Michaels, of Cochrane, WI. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in 2014. He started his 41-year career at Stout as an assistant instructor in graphic arts in 1946 and retired in July 1987 as Professor and Dean for Learning Resources. As the first Dean for Learning Resources, he developed one of the first university integrated media services organizations in the nation. He also served on many state and UW-System committees. Dave and his two beagles were a familiar sight on the East side of Menomonie as he took his daily walks. He enjoyed reading and boating on the family pontoon. He and his wife traveled to over 40 countries, all of the states and most of the Canadian provinces. He was an ardent land/seascape photographer, winning many awards for his work. Locally, Barnard was a member of the Menomonie Lions Club for over fifty years and of many other groups. He is survived by his wife Kathleen (Kay) of Pewaukee; one daughter Pastor Nancy Carmichael-Stoner of Jefferson, WI; two sons Charles M. Barnard of Menomonie, WI and Kent A. Barnard of Wild Rose, WI; four grandchildren, Suzanne (Douglas) Carmichael-Adkins of San Antonio, TX, Lee (Nicole Grandstrand) Carmichael of Waukesha, Alexander and Katie Barnard both of Forest Park, OH; and two great-grandchildren Oliver and Mercer Carmichael-Grandstrand both of Waukesha. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Carolyn Ann (Barnard) Hemingway, and his brother Myrven Walton Barnard. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Kirkland Crossings, 700 Quinlan Dr., Pewaukee, WI 53072 and sometime in August in Menomonie. His epitaph: "He Tried to make a Difference" . In lieu of flowers, the family and the deceased, prefer memorials to the David P.
