Howard Swernoff Notice
Swernoff, Howard June 28, 2013, age 91 years, of Bayside. Survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Gisha Hollander, sons Jimmy (Robin) and Michael (Miriam), grandchildren David (Robyn), Jeff (Allyson), Adam, Arielle, and Hannah and great -granddaughter Mia. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and other relatives. He entertained his entire family with his songs and stories. Howard was born May 2, 1922 in New York City. At age 20 he enlisted in the Army Air Force, served in ETO in WWII, and was a decorated airman. While serving as a navigator in the 460th Bomb Group, 761st Bomb Squadron on his 44th mission, Howard was shot down over Hungary and spent 11 months as a POW. He was awarded four Battle Stars, three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal, and a Purple Heart. After his service in the military he returned to the New York area and worked as a businessman for many years. He spent most of his life in Huntington, NY and was involved in numerous Jewish charitable causes including UJA. Howard recently moved to Wisconsin to be near family. Memorial services 4:00 PM Monday, July 1, 2013 at The Chapel, 3601 N. Oakland Ave., Shorewood. Private interment in New York. Memorial gifts to a are appreciated.
