John Richard Gnat Notice
Gnat, John Richard John Gnat died on Tuesday, October 1, 2013. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 7, 1921, he was the oldest son of seven children of John and Emilia (Syperek) Gnat. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, flying with Admiral Chester A. Nimitz as part of his flight crew. After serving in the war he was self employed and eventually owned his own business in Westfield, Massachusetts, until his retirement. John was married to Elinor (Krieger) Gnat for 42 years until her death in 1992. He is survived by three of his siblings; Edward Gnat of Franklin, Wisconsin; Emily Nath of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Raymond Gnat (Jean) of Indianapolis, Indiana as well as his daughter, Karla Trexler (William); grandchildren Jonathan, Benjamin and Rebekah Trexler and great-grandchildren Austin and Abigail Hammett, Elise and Noah Trexler and William Trexler. John had a full, interesting life and enjoyed living and working in Milwaukee, WI, Lake Worth, FL, Nashville, TN, and Westfield, MA. Retirement took him to St. Augustine and Jacksonville, FL, Virginia Beach, VA and for the last 6 years in Arden, NC where he was a regular attendee at the Lutheran Church of the Nativity in Arden. A celebration of John's life in sure and certain hope of his resurrection to life eternal is planned for 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 5, 2013 at The Lutheran Church of the Nativity, 2425 Hendersonville Road, Arden, NC with the Reverend Mark Fitzsimmons presiding. Interment will occur at a later date in the Saint Mark's Lutheran Church Columbarium in Jacksonville, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any of the following: Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, 4201 Main Street, Columbia, SC; Lenoir Rhyne Chapel building fund, 625 7th Ave. NE, Hickory, NC or Lutheridge Ministries, 2049 Upper Laurel Drive, Arden, NC 28704.
