Margaret Adel Mantyh

Notice Condolences

Mantyh, Margaret Adel (Nee Bruce) Passed away January 10, 2013, after declining health. She was born on Dec. 21, 1925 in Marquette, Michigan to Robert and Mary Bruce. Following the untimely death of her parents when she was 10, she and her sister Mary were raised by her beloved Aunt Rena and Uncle Wally Bruce in Marquette, Michigan. Margaret moved to Milwaukee when she was 18 and attended Stratton Business School while working at Gimbels Department store. She then worked as a secretary to the president of Lakeside Pharmaceuticals. She met her future husband, William (Bill) J. Mantyh, at a University of Michigan football game after Bill returned home after serving as a navigator in a Mitchell Bomber in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Margaret and William were wed in 1947, Bill became a prominent attorney in Milwaukee, and they remained married for 62 years until Bill passed away in March 2012. They had six children. Theresa died at birth and Catherine died at age 11 from complications of cerebral palsy. Margaret raised four boys: Steve who became a CIO/banker; Patrick, a neuroscientist; John, a nuclear engineer; and Chris, a surgeon. Margaret was gifted with energy and optimism. She was always tremendously cheerful, upbeat and kind. She was a founding member of St. Eugene's church and an ardent volunteer at the Christ Child Society. Margaret also loved to bake, garden, cook, bicycle, cross country ski, travel and above all care for her children and family. She was the glue that held the family together, the one always supporting her children's aspirations, and the mother /woman who loved and cared for all she met. She was always a bright light on even the darkest day and brought tremendous joy and life to the world. She was one of a kind and will be deeply missed. Margaret is survived by her sisters Mary and Jean, her four sons Steven (wife Vickie) of Random Lake Wisconsin, Patrick (wife Ingrid) of Edina, Minnesota, John (wife Francine) of North Palm Beach Florida and Christopher (wife Cynthia) of Durham, N.C., nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service in her honor will be held this summer. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Margaret Mantyh Fund at Marquette University High School.
