Melvin D. "Mel" Erickson Notice
Erickson, Melvin D. "Mel" Mel died peacefully on Monday, January 21, 2013, at age 90 after a short battle with cancer. He was born in Hayward, WI, on July 2, 1922 to Barbara and Martin Erickson and raised in Goodman, WI. His beloved wife of 60 years, Hazel, preceded him in death on February 1, 2011. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 26, at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home, from 12:00 PM until time of Memorial Service at 2:00PM. Interment will be at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Union Grove. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to St. Paul's United Church of Christ (N89 W16856 Appleton Ave., Menomonee Falls, 53051) or to VFW Post 9496 (N87 W16471 Appleton Ave., Menomonee Falls, WI 53051). While attending UW-LaCrosse in 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Following WWII, Mel moved to Milwaukee where he worked in the meat packing industry for more than 40 years. Mel and Hazel retired to Menomonee Falls in 1981 where they were active in St. Paul's United Church of Christ and served 28 years as volunteers at the Zablocki VA Medical Center. Mel also served in various leadership positions with VFW Post 9496 and received many awards from Wisconsin VFW. Mel loved following Wisconsin sports teams and enjoyed attending an occasional Brewers game. Mel was a kind, generous and courageous man, who was preceded in death by his parents; his four siblings, and his wife Hazel. He will be especially missed by Tom and Sharon Bissonnette, Russ and Doris Bousley, Beverly Wickland and her four children (godchildren of Mel and Hazel), and many other special friends and relatives.
