Koenig, Robert R., MD Of Mequon, went to his Heavenly home on Monday, August 11, 2014, at the age of 89. Husband of Betty Ann (nee Guenther) Koenig for nearly 60 years. Loving father of Jim (Barb) Koenig, Cindy (Brian) Metke, Jayne (Larry) Chovanec and Chris Farrell. Proud grandpa of Pam (Aaron) Becker, Katie Koenig, Lissa (Tom) DeGroot, Lainie (Nathan) Callahan, Pete (fiancée Anna Lorenz) Metke, Rachie, Ben, Jon (Misty) and Beka Farrell. Great-grandfather of his "two little tornadoes" Jacob and Evan DeGroot. Further survived by other loving relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at CHRIST CHURCH, 13460 N. Port Washington Rd., Mequon, WI 53097 on Saturday, August 16, from 2 PM until 4:15 PM with Funeral Services beginning at 4:30 PM. Burial will be private for the family at Immanuel Cemetery in Cedarburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bob's name may be directed to his church. Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, participating in the third day of the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He was at the front for 44 days before being critically wounded and sent back to the United States for recovery. For his dedicated service, Bob received the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and the Sharpshooter's Medal. Later in life Bob served his country for several decades in the National Guard, retiring at the rank of Major. Bob finished his education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison on the GI Bill, then earned his MD. While serving his residency at Columbia Hospital, he met his future wife, a nursing student, Betty Ann Guenther. They were united in marriage in 1954 and together lovingly raised four children. Bob was the Director of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Columbia Hospital and the Director of the School of Laboratory Technology at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He was a member of the Mequon Police Reserve from 1974 until 2008. Bob retired after 42 years of service as a Pathologist at Columbia Hospital at the age of 69. The most important things to Bob were God, Faith, Family and service. He was very involved with his church, first, Bay Shore Lutheran Church in Whitefish Bay and then Christ Church in Mequon, including Church Council and Sunday School Superintendent. He was involved in the Stephen Ministry, furthering the Christian faith in the community. He exemplified the Heavenly Father's love through his words and actions. Bob will be forever missed and loved by all whose lives he touched. He was a true Christian father.
