Trenton, TN - Edward Everette Hockaday died Wednesday morning, November 6, 2013 at Jackson Oaks Retirement Center in Jackson, TN at the age of 93.

He was born at home on the family farm in Brazil, TN on September 23, 1920, the son of Jessie Edward and Lela Mae Hockaday. His family moved to Trenton, TN at an early age and he graduated from Peabody High School in Trenton, TN in 1938. He was married to Dorothy Taylor Hockaday for 51 years, who survives him.

Mr. Hockaday was a member of First Baptist Church of Trenton, TN for more than 80 years and served as the Sunday School Director for 25 years. He also served as Chairman of the City of Trenton School Board, was Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, a member of the Board of Directors of the Gibson County Utility District, was Public Address Announcer for the Peabody Golden Tide football team for many years, and was a founding member of the Pinecrest Country Club.

Mr. Hockaday was a veteran of the United States Army and fought in the European Theatre as a member of the 35th Infantry Division during World War II. He was involved in combat at the Battle of the Bulge.

He was the owner for almost 50 years of Tyree & Hockaday, and later Hockaday & Yarbrough which was a Goodyear Tire Dealership, Auto Parts Company, and Service Station. He was known for baking his sour dough bread and sharing it with his friends, neighbors, and doctors. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, woodworking, and watching football, particularly the Tennessee Vols.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hockaday is survived by his only child, Dr. Eddie Hockaday and his wife, Connie of Jackson, TN; by two grandchildren, Edward Everette Hockaday III and Victoria Holland Hockaday; a sister, Nancy Miller of Dixon, KY; and a brother, Dr. Perry Hockaday of Pascagoula, MS.

The family would especially like to thank the wonderful caregivers and friends at Jackson Oaks for all of the kindness shown to Mr. Hockaday.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2013 at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow in Bowers Chapel Cemetery.
