The Guest Book is expired.
Samuel Crawford Holcomb passed away September 10, 2013 at the age of 95.
He was born October 16, 1917, son of the late Samuel Francis Holcomb and Irene Porter Holcomb. Pafford Funeral Home in Lexington, Tennessee is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Friday, September 13th from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., at Lexington Cemetery, conducted by Ray Chandler, pastor of Malesus United Methodist Church in Jackson, Tennessee, where Sam was an active member for many years.
Mr. Holcomb was owner of the family business, Holcomb-Porter Wholesale Grocery Business in Lexington, Tennessee with his brother, James Randall Holcomb. He was an unsung hero of the U. S. Army Air Corp, serving in the South Pacific during World War II, receiving four bronze stars.
On March 12, 1981 he married Olivia Buck Fesmire Holcomb. They shared a special love for one another for 32 years of marriage. People often noticed them holding hands during their morning walk in the park. They were avid travelers, visiting many destinations across the United States and Canada. Sam's favorite region of the U.S.A. was the west. This reflected his love of TV and Movie Westerns. He was an avid golfer, belonging to Woodland Hills Country Club. Each winter, he and Olivia would travel to Florida where Sam could play his favorite sport in a warmer climate. He was a humble man, meticulously making sure everything under his control was done to the best of his ability. Sam will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Dorothy Tolley Holcomb and their daughter, Margaret Ann Holcomb; his second wife, Mrs. Olivia Buck Fesmire Holcomb; his two brothers, James Randall Holcomb and Francis Nathaniel Holcomb; and his sister, Margueritte Holcomb Buck.
Sam is survived by his daughter, Sarah Holcomb Akin and Olivia's son, Glenn Fesmire; granddaughter, Kate Davis (Bradley); great-grandson, Raistlin Davis; two great-granddaughters, Dexie Davis and Anora Davis; sister-in-law, Norsie Tolley Frost; brother-in-law, Herbie Tolley; and a host of nieces and nephews.
We would like to extend a very special heartfelt Thank You to his caregivers, Debra Martin, LaRea Houston, Jayme Houston, Gwen Newton and Barbara Curry.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Baird-Buck Endowment for the chair of Cumberland Presbyterian Studies, c/o Dr. Jay Earheart-Brown at Memphis Theological Seminary, 168 E. Parkway South, Memphis, TN 38104.
