Melvin Pomeroy Obituary
Our hearts are heavy yet bursting with love and special memories as we share the news that Melvin Shephard Pomeroy passed away on August 6, 2014 in Sterling, Colorado, surrounded by his wife & daughters. He was born on May 19, 1926 in Terry, Montana. Melvin (Mel) served in World War II infantry from 1944 to 1946 earning a Bronze Star and returned to Terry, Montana to marry Bernice Haidle in 1949. Mel worked a variety of jobs to support his family "girls" including working in hardware stores, mortuaries, gas stations, loading docks, construction, farming, to driving trucks hauling crude and gauging oil. Working for oil companies, Permian and Unocal, brought the family from Montana to Nebraska and then Sterling, where he retired in 1990. When there was a job to be done, there was only one way to do it, and that was to do it right. Colossians 3:23, "whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not men..." In retirement, Mel could be found working in his garage or building his latest wood project, performing handyman duties fixing whatever friends or family needed, playing golf, shooting pool at the VFW, or attending his grandchildren's events and activities. As anyone who knew Melvin can attest, he was a devoted husband and father, with a quick wit and sense of humor that complemented his work ethic and character, providing a foundation that served and blessed his family for over 65 years. Melvin was cared for during his last days by a loving staff at Sterling Assisted Living with additional comfort and support from Hospice. We are grateful for the friends and family who regularly shared Bernice's devotion to his care and attention, sharing tears and laughter while reminiscing over a full life that was inexplicably fading. Mel is more than likely enjoying Heaven with those who preceded him, including Grandpa Shep and Grandma Mabel, the Pomeroy "kids" and daughter, Darla Jean. While his physical presence is gone, his memory and the positive mark he left on this earth will remain forever with those who were fortunate enough to share in his escapades, hear his stories and know his character & laughter. Melvin's family, left to celebrate life include his wife of 65 years, Bernice; daughter Lavonne and husband Steve Rauenbuehler; daughter Susan and husband Pete Straub; daughter Wendy and husband Gene Nuss; daughter Eleanor; grandchildren: Angie Novotny-Lawhenore (Jim), Karissa Novotny Melling (Dave), Shawn Novotny, Zach Novotny, Amy Flores, Tony Flores (Misu), Andy Flores (Elinor), Dustin Schaffer (Becky), Troy Nuss, Jodi Nuss, Sadie Anderson, Marshall Anderson, and Trevor Anderson; step-grandchildren Elizabeth Bartek, Sarah Straub, C.J. Rauenbuehler and Carrie DeSha; and 16 great-grandchildren. Please join us for a memorial celebration on Tuesday, August 12th at 10:30 a.m.at Christ United Methodist Church, 104 S. 4th Street, Sterling, CO 80751. Memorial contributions in Melvin's name may be given to CUMC Parking Lot fund, Hospice of the Plains, or Donor's choice c/o Tennant Funeral Home, PO Box 1547, Sterling, CO 80751.
